Julian Chapman

I have always loved painting and over the years have had many exhibitions, particularly of my batik paintings.

I take my inspiration from medieval manuscripts and woodcuts which I attempt to develop into more modern interpretations.

Batik is the art of painting with hot wax and dyes on material. The wax acts as a resist to the dyes and the marbling effect in the pictures is caused by the wax being cracked and the dyes penetrating these cracks. When the painting is completed, the wax is removed.

My designs often contain humorous medieval styled characters going about their daily activities or playing musical instruments.

I moved to Lincoln a few years ago and greatly enjoy painting Lincolnshire scenes in oils.

My work is influenced by my love of impressionist art, and I particularly enjoy painting woodland paths with strong shadows.

I find great inspiration in the grounds of Doddington Hall, Whisby, Belton and Rutland Water.
