Lost Stories: A Cross-cultural Visual Response to Identity

3rd -10th October 2020

Surface Gallery is delighted to present Lost Stories, a collaborative exhibition bringing together a cross-cultural visual response from four female artists.   Arit Emmanuela Etukudo / Szilvia Ponyiczki / Ivana Puskas / Una Nic Samhradháin

Lost Stories explores issues of identity and its socio-political context, as well as varying perspectives of conscious and unconscious worlds. This culminates in a collection of 2D and 3D works, as well as multimedia installations.

From tales of war and oppression, to a concern with the black female body and its movement through space, and an enquiry into the hidden world of the unconscious, the artists tell their stories.

Artist Talk – Saturday 10th October, 12pm

An opportunity to meet the artists and learn about the ideas behind the work. This is an informal event, and will be followed by a short Q & A.

Free Entry: Everyone Welcome

The images here are from the whole Show….

The main aspect of my work is the exploration of the personal and the collective unconscious through art.

To gain a deeper understanding of this world I approach it through the realm of dreams;

by painting figurative dreamscapes or abstract dream-carpets; sometimes giving these a sculptural form.

My aim is to incorporate the ways of the unconscious into my art processes, to build up a parallel world.

During the course of transformation a new visual language is generated, having properties of its own.

This is analogous to alchemy where from the source material (material prima) the healing Philosopher’s stone is created.

I believe that this artistic method mirrors the individuation process.
